Spending Ban

I saw a few spending ban posts around the beginning of the month from and Rachel and Donna, and I thought I'd just do one in my own head, rather than making official and in writing, of course that didn't work! I've spend far too much money this month when I really need to be saving up to fund accomdation when (if!) I go to uni in September, as I won't be able to get Student Finance for a second degree :(

A few things this will cover: I won't buy any clothes, I won't buy any make up or toiletries until I use up what I've already got, and I won't buy any books.  One exception to this is that I will buy clothes for work, as I work in retail and I need (I use this term rather loosely) (heavily discounted) new season clothes for uniform. I will try and buy less though!

I plan on majorly reducing my wardrobe, so expect links to eBay items over the next few weeks!

I'll also look into selling academic books on Amazon, and donating others to charity.

I also plan on using my local library a hell of a lot more! I have so many books on my shelves and on my kindle that I haven't read, so I'm going to work my way through those, but if I want that "new book" excitement I'll be on my way to the library straight away.

I'm going to stop donating monthly to charity through direct debit, and instead donate more items to the charity shops in my town.

Hopefully this will stretch my funds a little bit further and I might make some money on eBay, which will all go into the pot!

Are you trying to save up for something? What are your budgeting tips?

  1. I definitely need to use all of my products before buying more. This is my worst habit. I have so many academic books to sell off too!
My budgeting tips would be to say "Do I need this? Do I REALLY need this? Why?" I keep asking questions to myself when I pick something up!

  2. Sounds like a very sensible plan! I'm also trying to buy just what I need in the toiletries department and buying second hand has been fun so far. Good luck on the plan xx

  5. I hope that your spending ban is going well, I'd struggle with the little treats like cake and chocolate!

    1. I can't say it's going brilliantly to be honest.. its so easy just to go and buy a coffee, but I've been trying to take a bottle of water with me when I go out so I don't feel the need to buy drinks, and water is healthier, too! xx

  6. I set myself a 2016 challenge to use what I have rather than buying new, and its actually working really well! Vinted is an amazing app for selling clothes, I've raised over £160 from it! x

    1. Yes that is such a good idea! I really really do not "need" any clothes! At all! I just convince myself I do :/ I'll have a look at Vinted, I've managed to sell some stuff on ebay but a lot just doesn't sell.

  7. This sounds great - I cut back on thing like magazines a while back because I didn't realise how much it was costing me! I still need to work on not spending as much on treat foods, and save the money to go towards days out instead - good luck with this, I'm sure you'll ace it! - Tasha

    1. Magazines are so expensive! And you get far more real insight from blogs on any subject. I picked up Trail Running magazine the other day because I'd started reading it in the dentist's waiting room, but my justification was all the info you get for £4.50 is a lot cheaper than a gym or a nutritionist or personal trainer! xx
